The county of Surrey is one of England's smallest and most beautiful counties despite being one of its most highly populated. The county is in south east England immediately below London. It is still surprisingly rural with the rolling chalk slopes of the North Downs, picturesque country villages and large areas of woodland. Surrey's North Downs include the popular walking (and skiing) area of Box Hill and to the east is a range of sandy hills with Leith Hill, a secluded and thickly wooded beauty spot with an 18th century tower from which it is said that (on a clear day and with the aid of a telescope) you can see some of Wiltshire - over 250 miles away!

The name Surrey derives from the Saxon kingdom of 'Sudergeona' (meaning southern region) - at least seven Saxon Kings were crowned in the Surrey town of Kingston, now a large town on the banks of the River Thames. Just up the River from Kingston is Hampton Court Palace, the residence of Henry VIII. After the Norman invasion, castles were built at Farnham and Guildford both of which are now large towns. The remains of the castles can still be seen. Guildford is the County town and its impressive Cathedral on Stag Hill overlooks the town. In 1215 at Runnymede, an island on the Thames, King John signed the Magna Carta ('Great Charter') - the world's first written constitution on which much of the Constitution of the United States of America was based.

Epsom first became popular during the 17th century when its mineral-rich spring was discovered from which the famous Epsom Salts originate. Epsom is the site of the World famous Epsom Derby horse race which began in 1780. There are other horse racing venues at Lingfield Park and Sandown Park.

Sport is of major importance to Surrey with many public golf courses set in beautiful countryside and the Championship Course at Wentworth - home of the World Matchplay and the European PGA Championships. Cricket is also of great importance with Surrey County Cricket Club one of the top sides in the first class game and their home ground, The Oval, one of the England test venues. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, home of the Wimbledon Championships is also in Surrey / Greater London.
