Dyfed was an ancient kingdom or principality of south west Wales. The modern county of Dyfed covers over 2,200 square miles and is made up of 6 main districts:-

* Carmarthen (often considered to be the gateway to west Wales),
* Ceredigion (AKA Cardigan - possibly the most Welsh of all holiday areas in Wales with most of its residents continuing to speak the Welsh language),
* Dinefwr (the seat of the Welsh rulers of Deheubarth, the medieval principality of south-west Wales),
* Llanelli (20 km of coastline from Llanelli to Burry Port and beyond has recently become The Millennium Coastal Park),
* Preseli (the source of the bluestones used in the construction of Stonehenge) and
* Pembrokeshire (The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is one of the smallest National Parks in England and Wales).

Dyfed consists of a peninsula with Cardigan Bay to the north, Camarthen Bay to the south, and inlets to the west. Inland Dyfed is hilly and mountainous while the coasts are dotted with cliffs and sandy beaches. Traditionally Dyfed's main products are farming - potatoes, vegetables and flowers and sheep and cattle. Tourism has now become the major industry in the area. The county is an 'area of outstanding beauty' and has great variety. From its majestic coastal cliffs to sand dunes, river estuaries to cascading streams, from gently rolling arable land to rocky outcrop - all within a few miles of each other.
