The town of Markethill, with the main street ascending to the summit of a hill grew up around the demesne of the Acheson family, who received the land as a plantation grant from Kings James I.

The first castle was destroyed in 1641, but was replaced by a house within the demesne now known as Gosford Forest Park. There in 1729 the celebrated Dean Swift stayed with Sir Arthur Acheson, and the park now contains Dean Swift's Well & Chair - an arbour where he wrote.

The present Gosford Castle was built in the Normal Style, between 1830 and 1839, and with the surrounding Land now belongs to the Department of Agriculture.

The demesne is open to the public as a forest park. Markethill is itself a flourishing country town, with recently established light industries and a busy cattle market. G.H. Bassett, writing in 1888 noted that Markethill had been injured by the concentration of market interests in the larger towns, with Armagh and Portadown drawing away the cream of the produce. However, the town has since overcome this decline, and is one of the District's more flourishing and attractive centres
