A major centre in north Dorset, this town retains a majestic 15th century Abbey. The original dated back to the 8th century and was founded by St Aldhelm and evidence of this may also be seen. Around the Abbey is a pretty town, with two castles - one old, the other new. The first was built in the 12th century by a Bishop, and was given by Queen Elizabeth the First to Sir Walter Raleigh in recognition of his achievements. He decided it was too old and draughty, and built the new castle in the grounds nearby. In the 18th century the grounds were landscaped by Capability Brown, and are open to the public
